Introduction to our Overseas Judges

Maria-Luise Doppelreiter (Austria)

My first dog, the "English" Cocker Spaniel "Sir Jackie of Hilltop", came to me in 1973, bred by the late Rosemary Charrington. The first litter in my kennel "vom Oesterreichring" was born in October 1975, and in the last 47 years many successful dogs have been bred and/or shown by me. More than 100 Cockers and Border Terriers bred and/or owned by me became champions in different countries, and International Champions, many of them won BIS - the most prestigious win was Best in Show at the London Cocker Spaniel Society show with my Top Secret vom Oesterreichring, the first and so far only Austrian bred and owned Cocker to win BIS in the breed's country of origin. Conformation shows are not my only interest in dogs, some of my dogs also won or did very well in hunting trials, and many dogs from my kennel are successful at Companion-, Agility-, Obedience-, Rally Obedience-, Rescue-, Tracking- and Therapy Dog Tests and Competitions. Since 1983 I have judged in the following countries: Australia, Belarus, Belgium, China, Croatia, (former) CSSR, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Great Britain (Championship and Open Shows, A-list judge for Cocker Spaniels, C-list for all other Spaniels and Retrievers), Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Poland, Portugal, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Tasmania, (former) UDSSR, Ukraine, (former) Yugoslavia, and Austria. In some of these countries I've also held seminars for other judges. During the last years I became group judge for the FCI group 1 (Herding breeds), 3 (Terriers), 4 (Dachshunds), 5 (Spitz, Nordic and Primitive breeds), 8 (Spaniels, Retrievers, Water Dogs), 9 (Toys & Companion breeds) and 10 (Sighthounds), and am now approved to judge more than 240 breeds from all FCI groups. My big love - besides the spaniels - is Junior Handling, and I was one of the founders of these competitions and the Junior Handling Club in Austria. Together with 2 friends I also organize show handling training for adults in Austria. I'm also a judge for obedience, rally obedience and companion dog competitions, and for character and breeding permission tests. At International and Club shows I've judged braces and progeny/breeders groups, Best in Group, Best in Show, Best Junior in Show, Best Veteran in Show, Best Puppy in Show etc. For more than 30 years I was a committee member of the Austrian Spaniel Club, and chairman of the Styrian branch of the Austrian Spaniel Club (OeJSpK). Since many years I organize workshops for show handling, and am active as chairman and trainer at our local dog training club.
